Irish Hosting Business Market Shares May 2005

The problem with some players in the Irish hosting business is that they really don’t know what is happening in the market. The ISPs, particularly Esat seem to be in trouble as the Hosting Service Providers (HSPs) continue to take customers away from them. The breakdowns below show the total market share (over .ie/com/net/org/biz/info), the .ie market share and the com/net/org/biz/info market share for each of the top thirty hosters. Some HSPs are like icebergs in that only a small section shows above the waterline. The HSPs offering branded reseller packages, such as Hosting365, Host.ie, Blacknight.ie etc would have a greater hosting footprint than is shown in this market summary. A more comprehensive hosting footprint is included in the full HSP reports.

Notes:

BIONIC = Biz Ie Org Net Info Com
market = combined market share over BIONIC tlds.
ie = .ie market share percentage.
cnobi = com/net/org/biz/info market share percentage.

1: Seems to be targeted at customers outside of Ireland.
2: Second generation ISP. Started as Hoster.
3: Moved a major section of domains to US nameservers recently hence it
has a higher market share than shown here.

Some of these hosters have more domains and websites under their control
as they are billing and administrative contacts for domains not listed
on their nameservers or IP space.

The figures and statistics on the Irish hosting business are generated
monthly as part of a subscription spreadsheet based reporting service on

Sunday Business Post On Irish Hosting

An article in the Sunday Business Post carried some interesting angles on the web hosting. The quality of the article was a bit beyond the usual clueless rubbish that passes for technology journalism in the mainstream Irish media. The last time that the Sunday Business Post’s advertising supplement (Computers In Business) ventured into the realm of hosting, the clueless comments of its editor Adrian Weckler managed to unite the Irish hosting business. It seems that Weckler learned from his mistake and got Charlie Taylor to write this article. Four notable players in the Irish hosting business were interviewed. Stephen McCarron of Hosting365, Eoin Costello of Novara, Richard Tarr of HostIreland and Michele Neylon of Blacknight Solutions each gave their views and they showed a surprising commonality of purpose.
